Doctors who do not yet hold full medical registration in Australia can be employed and sponsored as a temporary resident while they are in the process of meeting the requirements to obtain full medical registration.
Temporary visas are the usual pathway to permanent residence for doctors who do not yet hold full medical registration in Australia.
The two most common temporary visa classes for temporary residence in Australia for overseas trained doctors are:
- The Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa (Sub Class 457)
- Medical Practitioners Visa (Sub Class 422)
Both visa classes can be applied for a period of between three (3) months and four (4) years, giving the medical practitioner adequate time to complete the study requirements in order to obtain full medical registration in Australia, and in turn meet a pre-requisite for permanent residency.
